The area of Germany where the Rottweiler's story begins is in the southwestern section, around the productive farm area of Wurttemberg - the district of Rottweil, to be specific, its principal city and district seat bearing the same name.

Around 260 A.D., the Romans were ousted from this area. Left behind were some of their dogs for which work was provided since cattle raising and agriculture remained the prime occupations. It was about 700 A.D. that a Christian church was built where formerly had stood the Roman Baths. As excavation began, the red tiles of former Roman villas came to light, and thus the city was named Rottweil, suggested by the appearance of these red tiles.

Rottweil became a prosperous marketplace and cultural center in time, attracting cattlemen, farmers and other traders from considerable distances to do business there. These men soon noticed the excellence of the "butcher's dogs", as the breed was then known, and started purchasing them. Here again, a capable dog or two was a necessity, not only in bringing in one's stock safely but also making the return trip with their money bags, for which no safer place could possibly be found than fastened to the collars of these dogs!

All of this led to increasing respect for the "butcher's dog", and local owners began selectively breeding them. Since they were considered far superior to others of their type to be found in that area, the name "Rottweiler" was bestowed upon them to distinguish them from the rest. This name has remained until the present day.

1. Never give your Rottweiler treats or a new toy just because they look cute. Always make them work for it or 'earn' it. This helps them feel important and they don't begin to think that everything is theirs for the taking.

2. Teaching your Rottweiler the "Leave It" or "Drop It" command early on helps keep your Rottweiler safe. Often they curiously pick up anything in their path and it can be quite poisonous or harmful to their mouth.

5.Rottweilers are famous for testing their owners over and over - especially when they're puppies. If they try to get up on the couch once and you say "NO" they'll wait a while and try it again. If you allow them to get up on the couch (or another family member allows it) the second time, watch out.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HALTER AND rottweiler muzzle

Halters aren't rottweiler muzzles, they are training tools. You actually correct them with it. Another words, you pull the leash and the nose noose of the halter wraps around their mouth and it closes their mouth/rottweiler muzzle and then it releases quickly which can not do with rottweiler muzzles. The rottweiler muzzle is just a stopping tool. You can't really correct with it. All you can do is put it on and apply physical correction and/or verbal correction. It's harder to teach a dog when to not display a bad behavior since it restricts the mouth all the time, which gives the impression to the dog that they can't do normal things all the time. Or, that they don't understand what they are doing wrong because their mouth is restricted all the time. With the halter, you can show the dog what they are doing wrong and correct them at the time when they are doing undesirable behavior. This teaches them what you desire from them because you are showing them when or when not to do a particular behavior. When properly used, the halter has stopped the most aggressive and biggest dogs.

How to use rottweiler collar

There are many styles of rottweiler collars to choose from depending on your rottweiler's size and disposition, and your training need. For the majority of rottweilers, a traditional nylon or leather rottweiler collar is sufficient. Other rottweiler collars for specific situations are described below. This discussion does not include remote training collars.

Traditional rottweiler Collars: Traditional rottweiler collars are available in a variety of styles, colors, and widths. They should ride high on your pet's neck, not loose so that it slides down near the top of his shoulder blades. rottweiler Collars should be snug with enough room to fit two fingers between your rottweiler's neck and his collar. For your rottweiler's safety, the collar should not be loose enough to slip over the pet's head. Collars should also not be so tight as to restrict breathing or cause coughing. Check collar size frequently on growing puppies. Use a tape measure to measure your pet's neck, then add on two to three inches.

Choose collar and lead width with hardware that matches your pet's size. Smaller, lightweight choices are for small rottweilers and puppies, and wider, more durable styles are for bigger, stronger pets.

Every collar you own should have a current nametag attached to it at all times.

rottweiler Harnesses: Harnesses, which go around the neck and around the shoulders behind the front legs, are recommended for rottweilers who have upper respiratory disease or diseases of the throat or trachea, such as a collapsed trachea. If a rottweiler with a collar pulls on the leash, it places pressure on the throat and trachea, causing irritation and coughing. Harnesses relieve that pressure.

Halter-type rottweiler Collars will give you the best control over your rottweiler. They give you control of your rottweiler's head and when you have control of the rottweiler's head, you have control of the rottweiler. There are several brands of these halter-type collars including the Halti collar. These collars look more like a horse's halter, with a band going around the back of the head, and another around the nose. The leash snaps onto the collar under the chin. When you pull on the leash, the rottweiler's head will either be pulled down or to the side - this makes it virtually impossible for the rottweiler to move ahead or pull you forward.

Some people are hesitant to use the collar since they feel it looks more like a muzzle than a collar. You may have people ask you about the collar, but more often than not, when you are through explaining it, they will ask you where they can get one for their rottweiler.

Chain-slip rottweiler Collars: Chain-slip collars, also called check chain or 'choke collars,' provide effective training and retraining tools when used correctly and on appropriate rottweilers. These collars are most often used for rottweilers that are strong-willed, pull when on a lead, or those that do not respond to training when wearing traditional collars.

If you plan to use a choke collar on your rottweiler, have a trainer show you how to use it correctly. Correct usage involves a quick 'tug-and-release' action (as opposed to a steady pulling) that tells the pet a different behavior is desired. These collars should only be worn during training sessions, never in a crate, and avoided in pets with delicate tracheas, such as Yorkshire Terriers.

The Rottweiler has a massive, powerful body. Muscular and athletic, it has a broad head and rounded forehead. The muzzle is well-developed with a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark with an expression of goodwill and loyalty. The ears are triangular, carried forward, and its nose is wide and black. The lips are black and inside the mouth it is dark-colored. The tail is customarily docked. Often born with rear dewclaws, these are usually removed when the tail is docked. The coat is short, hard and thick. It is black with brown markings on the cheeks and muzzle, paws and legs. A red color with brown markings also exists. There is a deficiency in the hair gene making the coloring a lighter red. Rottweiler bitches often have large litters; 12 puppies are not uncommon.

German Rottweiler vs. American Rottweiler - some claim there are variations of Rotties, the German Rottweiler and the American Rottweiler. German Rotties are said to be shorter, stockier and have a bigger blockier head, and American Rotties are said to be taller and leggier without as blocky a head. Others claim a Rottweiler is a Rottweiler and there is no such thing as a German Rottie. Some who have stated this argument have said, "a German Rottweiler is one born in Germany and an American Rottweiler is born in America." In any case, there are breeders breeding for the German Rottweiler look, which goes outside the AKC standard, while others are breeding for the American Rottweiler look, sticking to, or closer to, the AKC standard.
